Unlock Your Potential

Welcome to Lesson 08 of The Purposeful Performer!

This week, we’re focusing on the “Monthly Update,” a critical ritual to keep your annual strategy on track and adapt to new information.

By dedicating time each month to get clear, get clean, get confident, and get inspired, you’ll ensure continuous progress toward your MVP (Mission, Vision, Projects, Priorities, Principles, and Passions).

Total points up for grabs: 20

To stay on track, you need consistent rituals

“Being organized isn’t about getting rid of everything you own, it’s about making sure everything you own serves a purpose.”

Joshua Becker

At its core, the Monthly Update is your opportunity to recalibrate your Mission and refine your Vision. It’s about stepping out of the day-to-day grind to get a high-level perspective on your progress, update your Projects, reevaluate your Priorities, reconnect with your Principles, and reignite your Passions.

In your business and personal life, this is where you stop and ask:

  • What worked? Where did I make meaningful progress this month?

  • What didn’t? What roadblocks or distractions pulled me off course?

  • What needs adjusting? Where do I need to focus next?

  • What inspires me? What am I most excited about moving forward?

Why does it matter for a Level II Revenue Generator?

This isn’t just about checking boxes—it’s about aligning your execution with your overall strategy. The best in any field—from elite athletes to top executives—don’t just work harder. They refine their approach continuously.

And they do it consistently.

You’ll often hear about companies holding quarterly board meetings to review performance and strategic direction. But why wait three months to course-correct your own trajectory? Imagine the competitive edge you gain by running a “board meeting” with yourself every 30 days.

This isn’t about perfection. It’s about intentionality.

Here’s exactly why it’s so effective and how it works…

The Monthly Update allows you to stay on pace

“Reflection is the key to growth. Without looking back, we can’t move forward with clarity.”

Robin Sharma

Let’s take a step back. Why is this necessary?

Because without structure, everything starts to blur together.

Think about it: Have you ever looked back on a month and struggled to recall what you actually accomplished? That’s time blindness at work—a common issue in a world flooded with distractions, urgent demands, and constant noise.

The solution isn’t to work harder. It’s to work smarter by putting a process in place that forces you to pause, reflect, and adjust.

Take someone like Warren Buffett, for example. Buffett is famous for spending 80% of his time reading and thinking, rather than reacting to market fluctuations. His discipline in reflection has been a major key to his success. Similarly, Jeff Weiner, former CEO of LinkedIn, would schedule nothing on his calendar just to give himself time to think.

These leaders understand something most people overlook: Action without reflection is wasted effort.

The Monthly Update is your mechanism to prevent wasted effort. It allows you to:

  • Eliminate what’s not working (before it drains more time and energy)

  • Double down on what is working (so you accelerate momentum)

  • Reignite your motivation (because progress fuels performance)

  • Stay agile (so you can adapt to new opportunities or obstacles)

And just as important? It keeps overwhelm at bay.

When you have a dedicated space to process your progress, you stop carrying around that mental clutter of “Am I doing enough?” or “What should I be focusing on next?”

You’ll already know.

Make room for only the most important things

“Elite performers don’t leave their success to chance. They review, refine, and realign their focus consistently.”

Tim Grover

Let’s revisit last week’s MVP framework to help guide the Monthly Update.

Step 1: Get Clean

The first step is to clean up any lingering items from the previous month. The first place to start is from the bottom of the MVP framework—Projects.

As I’ve explained to my 1:1 coaching clients, I treated each account pursuit like a project when I was an active strategic seller. If I was at the end of a project, like winning the deal, I would create a detailed handover doc for the Client Partner to ensure they, and the supporting Customer Success team, had everything they needed to onboard the client.

Then, I would spend time in my CRM cleaning up all of my opportunities, ensuring all dead ones got appropriately closed/lost. I didn’t want anything in the CRM that was inaccurate or would cause unnecessary distractions, like my leaders asking for an update on a dead deal for the upcoming month.

Lastly, I would review all of my projects in flight (work and life), update the due date, and ensure each project had a clear next action on my calendar.

This part of the ritual was about breathing new life and freshness into my projects and pipeline while also ensuring my calendar was cleaned up for the month ahead.
